Morning Light???

I am really fascinated how some of my friends manage to capture light at various times of the day in their paintings. Have always wanted to do the same. This watercolour sketch was made from a photograph clicked by my friend KS Saini who is very fond of roaming in the hills. However it is a failed sketch because the aim of capturing the morning light could not be achieved. Just could not figure out the reason. Can someone help?

  1. Though you say that you couldnt achieve what you had in mind, this painting does have the vitality and the freshness that reflects the essence of the atmosphere. Beautiful, as it is! However I feel that since the sky color sets the mood for the landscape, for your morning light, you could have gone for a lightest value, coupled with glowing tops of the mountains and rich cooler shadows below. Just my thoughts :-)

Nice work Sir. But like u rightly commented, the soul is in a different mood here. I don't have experience with water colours, but in oils, I would have started hills with darker shades of blue, further darkening them with black for only subtle contouring, sky with only blue and white dissolving half way..

If u r interested, I can post few more landscapes, which I think u can really do justice to, with ur capability..

  3. Very lovely piece~! Reminds me a bit of Sargent's watercolors. You really do have a way with color and mood for the landscape.

  5. I like the wide knocks of brushes in the sky which stress emphasize the whites and highlight the light.
    Beautiful poetry.

  6. This is a lovely scene, painted very freshly--I like it as is.
Morning light is usually cooler than daytime, snd you have mostly cool here, but I wonder if dropping just a small but of a warm yellow--ochre?--into the tops of the distant mountains when they were still wet would add that sun-kissed look? I hasten to say, I don't know, it's just an idea and I really do think it's lovely as is.

  7. I don't know... But I think the painting is successful on many levels. My favorite is the lavender which in my opinion is good for dusk or dawn! (:
